5 questions to MCTE-hosts KEEN Coffee

Rob Kerkhoff and Bonne Postma of KEEN Coffee tell us why The Mindful Coffee Tasting Experience is a must during your visit to this year’s Amsterdam Coffee Festival.

After a successful first edition The Mindful Coffee Tasting Experience returns to The Amsterdam Coffee Festival 2020. Keen Coffee will again be providing the coffee and guiding this VIP-experience, together with Just Breathe London. We asked the founders of the Utrecht-based roastery about the upcoming meditative tasting session.

KEEN and The Mindful Coffee Movement: what makes this a match made in heaven?

In our roastery we cup new coffee samples every Thursday at the same time, in the same space and under the same conditions. We do this without talking, without music or other distractions, so we have our full focus on consciously tasting the coffees. Within the fuss of daily life people often forget to be conscious of what they consume or what they experience. For an optimal (flavor) experience of coffee mindfulness is very important. Bonne and myself both use the app Headspace daily, to return to this now-moment and let our thoughts run free.

Why is it so important to consume coffee more consciously?
Coffee has so many different flavors. By more consciously drinking, you will straight away taste so much more than when you tip your cup back while busy with other things. Without milk and sugar of course! Specialty coffee is extraordinary enough on its own. You don’t need to add anything.

What makes the Mindful Coffee Tasting Experience of this year’s festival unmissable?

Of course in essence it is a coffee-tasting. Just one that makes you very aware of the effect of your surroundings and senses on that which you are tasting and perceiving. An awareness you can take home with you and which you can apply within your own daily coffee ritual.

Are you doing certain things differently than last year?

This year we want to make water infusions with flavors that are found in the coffees we are tasting. This helps us to recognize the flavors. In addition to that, we are hoping to let the participants experience the effect of different sound tones on the taste experience.

What can you tell us about the coffee you have selected?

This year we are serving the natural Ye Genet from Ethiopia, as well as an Aqua de Nieve from Peru. Real flavor bombs. Because the beans have been dried while in the fruit, the Ethiopian natural is remarkably juicy with funky flowery and fruity flavor notes. The Aqua de Nieve, with a grape-like acidity, sweet and tropical lychee-notes and a milk chocolate aftertaste, is part of our direct trade-project. Through the Future Coffee Collective by MVO Nederland we will, together with Cultivar, be working on increasing the quality of the coffees even more, but most importantly creating better living conditions for the farmers.
