the essential ingredients for a winning cocktail formula


It debuted to rip-roaring success at The Amsterdam Coffee Festival 2017, and now Coffee Mixologists is back for a second edition. Once again, teams of two will take to the stage for four rounds of high-octane knockout competition.

Fusing the world of coffee and cocktails, each team comprises one bartender and one mixologist; artisans who work to perfect one core component and creative all-rounders. From the Signature Drink round to secret ingredients challenges, the duos must showcase skill, creativity, showmanship, innovation, professionalism and teamwork.

And the prize, we hear you ask? The title of Coffee Mixologist 2018, €1,000 cash and an exciting trip to London during The London Coffee Festival (12-15 April, 2018).

Step 1 – Teams of two (one barista and one mixologist) are invited to submit a one-two minute video of their coffee cocktail creation online by 1 February, 2018. Something a little like these...


Step 2 – A panel of experts will review the videos and the top 16 teams announced.

Step 3 – The successful teams will be invited to take part in Coffee Mixologists 2018 at The Amsterdam Coffee Festival.





Round 1: Friday 10:15-6pm
The Signature Drink
8 teams consisting each of one barista and one mixologist will compete across 4 battles for the highest scores. Each will have 12 minutes to complete and prepare two identical drinks, replicating the same Signature Drink as presented in their application video. They will have three minutes to present their drink to the judges.

Quarter finals: Saturday 11am-4pm

The Mystery
A knockout format applies from now on. The teams will compete across four battles for the highest scores. Both teams will be presented with an identical drink title and mystery trolley containing ‘guest’ ingredients. They will have 15 minutes to design and present a drink based on their own interpretation of the given title, containing two ingredients from the mystery trolley, a guest single origin coffee and an alcohol.

Semi Final: Sunday, 12-2pm

Redefining the Classic
The four winning teams will compete across two knockout battles. Each team will have 20 minutes to plan and prepare two identical drinks, which must involve Tia Maria, and three minutes to present them to the judges. Each team will be presented with an identical ‘classic’ coffee cocktail title and must prepare the drink given according to their own interpretation of ‘redefining’ the classic.

The Final, Sunday
The winning teams will proceed to the final battle for the Coffee Mixologists title. Each team will have 25 minutes to plan and prepare two identical drinks, which must involve Tia Maria and a guest single origin coffee, and three minutes to present them to the judges. Finalists will create a freestyle drink of choice, using ingredients of their own, as well as from The Pantry, as provided by Coffee Mixologists. The winning team will take home the coveted title of Coffee Mixologists, 1,000€ and an all expenses paid VIP trip to The London Coffee Festival in April.

Anne is a Swedish Barista and Brewers champion and the visionary behind Koppi, an internationally respected and well-loved coffee roaster in the Swedish town of Helsingborg.

Hani Asfdaai


After six years working as a bar tender Hani opened his own bar, Noah in Rotterdam in 2015. Hani's mixology skills have led him to being crowned creator of The Best Cocktail in 2016 and more recently, the title of Best Bar Tender by the Entree Hospitality Awards. 

James Wise


James Wise’s rise to coffee stardom might seem breakneck in its rush to the top, but it would be a mistake to see his as a Cinderella story. This is a man who has worked incredibly hard in the three years it took to get from commuter barista to London Coffee Masters Champion.  James’ has brought this ability to speed-read the trends of the bar and café world to his consultancy work at the creative helm of several progressive game-changing cafes and bars throughout the UK. Going full circle, James is now working with Assembly - one of the world’s leading coffee roasters.

Legendary coffee liqueur house Tia Maria is returning as the official sponsor of Coffee Mixologists, but it doesn’t stop at the competition; from Friday to Sunday, Tia Maria will be hosting workshops on the stage.
